Looking beyond the Dolch Lists

Alton L. Raygor, Jerry L. Johns · Journal of Reading Behavior · 1972

The purpose of this study was to compare the first 220 most frequently occurring words in the Kucera-Francis Corpus to the Dolch list. The Corpus is a book of 1,014,232 words compiled by Kucera and Francis (1967) from 500 samples of various materials. The resulting list from this comparison was then compared with the Dolch list of 95 common nouns since numerous nouns appeared on the Corpus list. All words on the Corpus which also appeared on the Dolch list of common nouns were then eliminated.
