Structure in Computer Science:
Florence E. DeHart, Marylouise D. Meder · Technical Services Quarterly · 1987
Expanded Dewey Decimal Classification schedules for data processing, computer science, and computer engineering were published in 1985. The structure of this DDC Revision, construed as the identification and placement of topics, is important to online search activity for the DDC scheme's possible advantages in browsing. That structure was examined relative to the structure of the following two schemes in the computer science area: (1) CR Classification Scheme, and (2) Propaedia of The New Encyclopaedia Britannica. These two schemes were not regarded as standards against which to judge the DDC Revision. Rather, their structure was analyzed for insights as to how their creators viewed and reflected in the schemes the structure of the computer science field itself. Implications for future DDC revision in data processing/computer science are identified.
