The problem of abrupt change in plate current, which is often reported to appear within vacuum tubes, when the magnitude of a injected current passing through a screen grid into the space formed between the screen grid and a plate is gradually varied, has been discussed in this paper depending upon the author's own idea. These reports have been made by various investigators, such as Gill in 1925, Fay, Samuel and Shockley in 1938, Jaffe in 1944, Rothe and Kleen in 1940, and Strutt in 1940, etc. Looking over their descriptions, it will be seen that notwithstanding their exhaustive investigations of functional equations derived, there has been left one point untouched. They attempted to analyse this problem only from the restricted study between the screen grid and plate and neglected the important conspiring action of the electron dispersion by the grid with the resulting space charge.
