A Relation Semantics Elicitation Prototype for the Semantic Web.

The semantic capabilities of constructs provided by the Web Ontology Language (OWL) are inadequate for capturing the intrinsic nature of relations in ontologies. OWL is limited in scope to capturing simple mathematical properties of relations such as transitivity. This work describes a prototype that has been developed to add additional intrinsic semantics to basic relation definitions in OWL ontologies using constructs provided by the Resource Description Framework (RDF). The prototype interactively elicits the intrinsic semantics of relations from knowledge providers. These additional semantics provide a framework for the quantitative analysis of the differences and similarities among relations. Moreover, they can be used as the basis of formal techniques to construct domain specific relation hierarchies that contribute to knowledge sharing and reuse on the Semantic Web.
