The design of cantor: a new system for data analysis

A transportable system for the analysis of large sets of data forming complex information structures, has been developed at the Swedish National Defense Research Institute. The system is based on a relational data base handler of unique design, permitting efficient data storage and fast evaluation of complex, spontaneous queries. A query language, based on set algebra and oriented towards scientist users, was developed for the system. This paper emphasizes aspects of the system design considered to be essential in order to meet the functional and performance requirements in the above-mentioned area of application.
