Abstract In five years from now, any large organisation without electronic mail interconnections will be at the same competitive disadvantage as any company today without the benefit of a telephone system. Even in terms of the computer and communications businesses, that is rapid progress indeed for a technology based on an international standard which was only formalised two years ago.
