First of all, I would like to thank my advisor professor Russell for his supports, mentoring, and patience. For the past five years, he allowed me lots of freedom to make mistakes, struggle, and test any ideas I have.In addition to that, he did not forget to give me proper tension at right moments and encourage me when I was depressed with piles of gloomy data. With insights, he found subtle values out of such data and encouraged me to pursue the projects. His ability to manage a large and diverse group is one of the things 1 wish to have someday, as well as his energy and bottomless research ideas encompassing diverse fields.Thank you Tom for all your supports and being a good role model. 1 would also like to thank my committee members, professor Tew and professor Thayumanavan. They were collaborators for Chapter 2 and 3 of my thesis work, respectively. With keen intelligence, they pointed lots of things I missed and helped me to understand the projects better.Although they were nice collaborators, they did not forget their role as the committee members. They didn't hesitate to give constructive criticisms, which helped me to improve the integrity of this thesis.During the defenses, most of the tough questions were raised for what I took for granted.V Through this experience, I was able to remind the importance of critical minds needed for a competent scientist and realize what are expected from a Ph D.
