A Stochastic Cellular Automata Approach to Cellular Dynamics for HIV : Effect of Viral Mutation

A stochastic cellular automata (SCA) approach is introduced to study the effect of viral mutation on the cellular populations (N-M, N-H, N-C, N-V) of macrophages (M), helper cells (H), cytotoxic cells (C), and virus (V) in an HN immune response. In absence of mutation, the immune system wins over the viral infection i.e., N-H, N-C > N-V and even at low mutation, the magnitude of N-H and N-C becomes comparable to N-V with a relatively large amplitude of oscillations at low mobility. The amplitude of oscillations in variation of N-H, N-C and N-V with time decreases with a nonmonotonic viral growth at high mobility where N-V becomes larger than N-H and N-C in long time even at low mutation. On increasing mutation, the viral population becomes much larger than that of the host cells particularly at high cellular mobility leading to AIDS.
