Bluetooth™–A Wireless Personal Area Network

Brent A. Miller · The Internet Encyclopedia · 2004

Abstract This chapter explores Bluetooth™ wireless technology, a short‐range, low‐power radio frequency communications mechanism, focusing on its application in wireless personal‐area networks (WPANs). I discuss the origins of the technology and the associated Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). I describe WPANs and various usage scenarios and applications for Bluetooth wireless technology and present a technical overview of the Bluetooth specification—both the protocol stack and the profiles. I also offer a brief comparison of Bluetooth communication to other wireless technologies. This chapter should provide a general understanding of Bluetooth technology, its applications, its principles of operation, and how it relates to other forms of wireless communication. It also provides references that offer more detailed discussions of various aspects of the technology.
