An analog computer circuit was developed for the investigation of the dynamic short term behavior of thermal reactors which permitted calculation through any desired number of decades. First of all the physical facts leading to the development of the method are set out. These considerations underlie a thermal reactor of sufficient size to justify the application in the dynamic equations of spatially integral quantities. A rigorous solution is given for the case of step function changes in reactivity which is of interest as a limiting case of ramp function changes. Ramp function changes in reactivity are not soluble by calculation in closed form. Also the solution on a normally equipped analog computer is not possible since the power alters in the course of the calculation by many powers of ten. In the description of the developed method it is shown how this problem can be solved with a circuit assembled from components which are almost all available commercially. A selection of results of the calculation carried out with the computer is reproduced. The results show that the essential characteristics of the results for step function changes are also valid for the ramp function changes. The circuit is described and discussedmore » in detail.
