A review is presented of current applications and advanced development of supercomputers, the basic tools of CFD that are required for speed and simulation and can replace physical experiments and testing. For example, the Pegasus vehicle was designed utilizing CFD and launched with no prior wind tunnel evaluation. Consideration is given to advanced technologies including vector-style accessories, massive parallelism, vector-parallel merging, and coupled mutidisciplinary models. Attention is given to the principal aspects and goals of the National Research and Education Network and the High Performance Computing and Communications programs driven by the recognition that unprecedented computational power and capability are needed to investigate and understand a wide range of scientific and engineering 'grand challenge' problems.
