Data Acquisition by Roadside Detection

Christoph Röth · Encyclopedia of Automotive Engineering · 2014

All intelligent traffic systems rely on accurate traffic data which is in many cases acquired by roadside equipment. A large variety of data types and detector technologies are used depending on the use cases and the requirements of the overall system. The choice of the most suitable detector requires technical know how of the detection technologies and the data types the detector is able to provide and the respective data accuracies. The data types range from vehicle presence information to traffic data acquisition with advanced vehicle classification. The vehicle detectors are based on a variety of technologies like inductive loop technology, radar, video, or magnetic field and they are installed in the road surface, above the road or on poles on the side of the road. This section provides an overview of the most frequently used data types, used cases and detector technologies.
