Practical guidelines for temperature measurement

Howard Smithline, Chris Lewis · OSTI OAI (U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information) · 1993

Temperature can be measured via a diverse array of sensors. All of them infer temperature by sensing some change in a physical characteristic. Six types with which the engineer is likely to come into contact are: thermocouples, resistive temperature devices (RTDs and thermistors), infrared radiators, bimetallic devices, liquid expansion devices, and change-of-state devices. The paper begins with a brief review of each. In the chemical process industries, the most commonly used temperature sensors are thermocouples, resistive devices and infrared devices. The paper explains how these devices work and how they should be used.
