Robert W. Proctor, Kim‐Phuong L. Vu · The Internet Encyclopedia · 2004
Abstract Human factors and ergonomics (HFE) is a field devoted to designing products for human use. A related field, human–computer interaction, focuses specifically on usability of computers. Application of HFE principles has been shown to be essential for ensuring the success of Web‐based interfaces. In this chapter, we review the main tenets of HFE and its role in development of Internet applications. We discuss issues pertaining to Web search, content preparation and management, universal access, and information security. We describe methods of task analysis and usability testing that can be used to evaluate the usability of Web designs and interactions at all phases of the design process. In closing, we provide general guidelines for incorporating HFE principles into designing for the Internet.
