Matrix harmonics method and the solution of one-dimensional matrix models of field theory

The method of matrix harmonics is used to solve the U(N)-invariant one-dimensional matrix phi/sup 4/ model for N = 2,3,4, and 5 and N..-->..infinity. It is shown that in the minimal harmonic approximation the ground state energy coincides with the known exact value to within < or approx. =1%.
