Internet-enabled devices are becoming a commodity. However, all these devices strongly differ in capabilities and characteristics. To enable content providers to deliver optimized content for these devices, it is necessary that the content providers are informed about the usage environment of the client. In this paper we discuss the necessity of this information and various ways to structure and to store it by using HTTP Header, CC/PP, and MPEG-21. We discuss an MPEG-21 compliant parser that facilitates the reading and manipulation of MPEG-21 compliant usage environment descriptions. This parser is evaluated for its usefulness in constrained environments and devices, such as cell phones.
