Introduction The Integrated Diagnostics for Environmental and Analytical Systems (IDEAS) research work combines the System on Chip (SoC) and Lab on Chip (LoC) methodologies in order to design a capsule capable of traversing the gastrointestinal tract, taking advantage of the natural peristaltic motion of the gut. Such a device has been shown to be capable of providing sensor data from the small intestine that is currently beyond the reach of traditional medical endoscopy [1]. A number of similar systems have been developed and are commercially available, transmitting images and pH readings from within the gastrointestinal tract [1,2]. The aim of this research project involves the design of such a capsule and a portable base station system. More particularly, our work aims to integrate sensors, processing and RF electronics onto a single piece of silicon, as opposed to tightly packaged off-the-shelf components. The system is designed to have real-time data acquisition and processing c
