Pattern and toolkits in introductory CS courses
Richard Rasala, Viera K. Proulx · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2000
This workshop will focus on the pedagogy for teaching introductory programming courses and the materials that support this approach. In our model, students learn programming basics by using elementary programming and design patterns. students then apply their skills in larger laboratory projects that present interesting applications of computer science. A collection of pattern tutorials and related laboratory problems will be presented and made available to the participants. All programming work is supported by the extensive use of core toolkits that serve as design models. The pattern tutorials, laboratories, and core toolkits are currently in use in C++ and are being developed in Java.
