Distributed Wide-Address Operating Systems

Povl T. Koch · 1993

Recent microprocessor architectures with 64-bit flat addressing open possibilities for new operating systems concepts that will facilitate sharing. A uniform virtual address space can be distributed among many machines and shared between multiple potentially mistrusting processes. Few wide-address systems have been implemented and no experience with a distributed version exist. The design issues for such systems include how to name and reference objects, protect applications from each other, and how to organize and manage the distributed address space.
