Earth science information systems: A perspective from the Pilot Land Data System

Blanche W. Meeson, Donald E. Strebel, Earnest D. Paylor · AIP conference proceedings · 1993

Over the last few years the Pilot Land Data System (PLDS), in partnership with the Land Science community, has developed an on‐line information system and a set of off‐line services to support Land Science information system needs. The requirements which the scientific community identified in this cooperative process, the implications for the architecture of the data system, and the solutions which the PLDS adopted are the focus of this paper. The architecture and services which were implemented are broadly applicable to a wide variety of scientific information systems.
