This paper presents an approach to realizing a non-expansive one-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with Perfect Reconstruction (PR). It is shown through a multi-octave analysis that by adjusting the output of 1-D DWT as well as modifying the corresponding inverse (reconstruction formula), an efficient overall system can be obtained. In addition, a method to construct a diagram that illustrates the relationships among wavelet coefficients is described. The proposed technique is well suited for VLSI implementation of a PR-DWT system using systolic architectures.
