Representation and compression of facsimile and graphics data

Phillip L. Kelly, V. Ralph Algazi · NASA STI/Recon Technical Report N · 1986

Digital transmission and storage of facsimile images became a topic of active research and commercial interest in the mid 1970's. Goal of our research is to establish a framework for modeling facsimile data and then use this framework to more efficiently represent facsimile images while maintaining or improving quality. In this report we limit our focus to three aspects of our proposed framework, namely preprocessing, global modeling, and signal representation. We also briefly review current models for facsimile images.
