Image-Based Recognition of Biological Motion, Scenes, and Objects

I Bülthoff, HH Bülthoff · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2006

This chapter summarizes evidence favoring the use of viewpoint-specific representations in the perception of moving objects (point-light walkers), moving faces, and moving scenes (i.e., scenes presented to viewers as if they were moving through them). It assumes that viewpoint-dependent representations are holistic, and that view-independent representations are analytic. It reviews several recognition experiments that support the use of image-based mechanisms for object recognition. The research also pushes the boundaries of classic object recognition to incorporate new territory. It reviews studies investigating the recognition of dynamic objects (biological motion), testing the recognition of scenes in virtual reality, and exploring the temporal aspect of object recognition.
