Amps: An Environment for Personal Computers

Brett D. Fleisch, E.A. Burke, Clinton Parker · UR Research (University of Rochester) · 1981

Amps (A Message Passing System) is an implemented operating system running on a network of minicomputers at the University of Rochester. Amps is a descendant of RIG (Rochester's Intelligent Gateway) and includes RIG's best features but also has significant differences arising from experiences with RIG, distributed systems and personal computers. An extensive set of services is being developed for Amps; the goal is to provide an environment for research in distributed systems at Rochester as well as to support the daily work of the computer science laboratory. Here we describe Amps and compare it to other contemporary systems.
