MA5K K-Generators

In this paper, we present a class of binary keystream generators, MA5K, intended for hardware implementation. The construction of this class is related to the class A5=2 used in GSM mobile communications. Three subclasses of MA5K are considered, namely linear, mixed and nonlinear keystream generators. However, the main contribution of this paper is dedicated to two subclasses: the mixed and linear subclasses producing keystreams with maximal possible period lengths. We present all necessary conditions for generators of these subclasses to produce keystreams with maximal period lengths, high linear complexity measures and good statistical properties. The security level of MA5K against various cryptanalytic attacks is presented. Finally, experiments are performed using the NIST statistical test suite FIPS 140-2 to demonstrate the good randomness properties of MA5K keystreams.
