A heterogeneous farm platform for distributed computing

A fully integrated ‘‘farm’’ of VMS and ULTRIX machines has been developed for the ALEPH experiment at CERN. Like other farms, this software facilitates the distribution of large CPU intensive jobs amongst a loosely coupled group of processors to maximize the aggregate CPU power. Unlike other farms, this software system provides a mechanism for the complete cooperation and inter‐operability of mixed operating system machines.
