Examples of Inverse Problems Arising in Applications

Harvey Thomas Banks, Karl K. Kunisch · Birkhäuser Boston eBooks · 1989

In this initial chapter we present several motivating examples for the mathematical and computational discussions to be given in subsequent chapters of this monograph. These examples are chosen from different scientific areas, and involve typical mathematical modeling questions. They illustrate the importance of determining unknown parameters (e.g., coefficients, boundary terms, initial conditions) from observations of the systems for which a quantitative model is being sought. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
