Brief Overview of the Evolution of and Technology for High Definition Television
Sati Banerjee · SPIE eBooks · 1998
We trace the numerous stages in the evolution of the current high definition standard for digital television. We begin by briefly summarizing the governing issues for video compression and describe the methods that are used in general to achieve substantial compression in video applications. We then briefly describe the features, syntax and semantics of the MPEG-2 video standard that enable it to target a wide variety ofapplications, among them those of high definition television (HDTV). In this context, we dwell upon the early attempts at coding video of very high resolution culminating eventually in the establishment of the Advanced Television Systems Committee's (ATSC) US standard for HDTV We mention the computational complexity and the memory bandwidth requirements of this demanding video compression technology. We also briefly detail the issues of display format conversion for the range of formats specified by the ATSC standard.
