Quantifying the Bull's-Eye Effect: Thick Slices

The bull’s-eye effect is a distortion in redshift-space that enhances large scale structures lying transverse to the line of sight, producing maps in which the observer seems to be ringed by concentric walls of galaxies.1 The effect is easy to see by eye (Fig. 1), but is proving difficult to quantify. We show below that one promising statistic, which seemed to work when applied to thin slices of simulation,2 falls down when applied to thick slices.
