Classification of Harp and Hooded Seal Pups from Aerial Imagery

Lori Hogan, C-Core · 2010

Harp and hooded seal pup populations are routinely extrapolated from the results of aerial photography surveys conducted by DFO during whelping season. These estimated populations form the basis of seal hunt quotas. Currently, the process of counting seal pups in aerial photos is done manually by trained scientists, taking 12 to 18 months before results can be released. The automation of this process involves image blob analysis, and classification of potential targets extracted from imagery. This paper focuses on the classification of identified potential targets. It deals with feature transformation and reduction, data normalization, different classification techniques attempted and their different results. Eligible for GOLD award. IEEE #:41259599
