Study of signal strength based handover initiation algorithm

Brahmjit Singh, K.K. Aggarwal · 2002

Handover is the process that transfers an ongoing call from one cell to another as a mobile station moves throughout the coverage area of a cellular system. This paper investigates the performance of signal strength based handover initiation algorithm. The decision criterion is based on relative signal strength with threshold and hysteresis margin approach. Average number of handovers experienced during a single trip of mobile from one cell to another and the handover delay has been used as performance metrics. It is shown that addition of absolute threshold effectively reduces the unnecessary handovers. Moreover, by properly selecting the threshold value, we can reduce the handover area, which in turn reduces the interference.
