This chapter focuses on the scope of the Delivery-shift and Request-shift approaches in depeaking congestion while improving the network yield. The Delivery-shift approach is better able to utilize short-term transmission opportunities and improve yield. One scheme that is capable of adapting to and making use of capacity variations is described. The chapter evaluates two cases: predictable and unpredictable traffic patterns. The first case allows the comparison of Async with TUBE in a fair manner. The second case evaluates the adaptive nature of Async to runtime deviations to the traffic pattern assumed. The evaluations suggest that while the Request-shift approach is simple to instantiate, it may not effectively alleviate congestion, whereas the Delivery-shift approach exercises greater network control over how flows are deferred and, hence, achieves better congestion and yield management, leading to higher quality of experience (QoE), albeit with extra system complexity.
