Carrier Ethernet Architectures and Services

Mehmet Toy · 2012

Ethernet is becoming a dominant technology in enterprise networks, allowing bandwidth partitioning, user segregation, and traffic prioritization, introduced by IEEE 802.1P and 1Q. Ethernet is scalable from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps with finer granularity as low as 56 kbps and 1 Mbps. Carrier Ethernet allows incremental bandwidth assignment. Ethernet transport network is a two-layer network consisting of Ethernet MAC layer network and Ethernet PHY layer network. This chapter describes the interface between user and network, interface between networks, and connection types between users. UNI tunnel access (UTA) is composed of a UTA OVC component in the Operator MEN and an associated VUNI in Provider MEN and RUNI in the Operator MEN components. The chapter describes the requirements for each component. It defines the Metro Ethernet fundamentals in terms of architecture and services that can be used in service deployments on a single network as well as on multiple networks. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Channel allocation; ethernet networks; media access protocol; tunnels
