A Local Area Network in Meteorology

Richard E. Maine, SP Munro · Annual Conference on Computers · 1983

A local area network (NET-ONE) has been configured as the active component of an integrated peripheral subsystem which provides distributed services from a central computer site. The network is connected with two large FACOM host mainframe computers, and provides 'virtual circuit' and 'datagram' services for host to user terminal interaction, sharing of printing devices and interchange of graphic data between workstations, hosts and an image processing system. A feature of the application is its emphasis on flexible interconnection of a wide range of 'OEM' peripheral devices and its use as a primary means of transporting high density weather satellite image data independent of the mainframes.
