Data Transmission with Contact Cards

Wolfgang Rankl, Wolfgang Effing · 2010

Data transmission using the six or eight contacts of a smart card module is still the most commonly used form of message exchange between terminals and smart cards. The general parameters of the physical transmission layer are specified in the ISO/IEC 7816-3 standard for smart cards. Assignment of the physical high or low level to the logic 1 state is freely definable, with the actual assignment being indicated by the card in the first byte of the Answer to Reset (ATR). Synchronous data transmission with memory cards is very closely linked to the chip’s hardware and is designed to be as simple as possible. Data transmission on the I2C bus always uses single-byte packets. In order to support USB communication with a smart card microcontroller, the microcontroller needs a special hardware component. The chapter also describes MultiMediaCard (MMC) transmission protocol and single-wire protocol (SWP). Controlled Vocabulary Terms data communication; smart cards; Universal Serial Bus transmission protocol
