The contamination of potable water by chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) agents could cause great damage to human health and major disruption to the lives of those dependent on safe water. CBR agent detection, identification, and elimination are of the utmost importance in securing the safety of our water supplies. This article summarizes various CBR threats, design priorities for protection, treatment methods, and response strategies. It also describes the recent development of control systems and test apparatus to assist in modeling the fate and transport of CBR agents.
