Additional power reduction offered by fast power control over slow power control in multimedia communications over WLANs

An expression is derived to estimate the additional power reduction (APR) offered by fast power control (FPC) over slow power control (SPC) in multimedia communications over wireless local area networks (WLANs). The derived result is used to investigate achievable APRs for WLANs operating on Rician-fading channels with or without diversity reception. The results indicate that using FPC instead of SPC yields a substantial reduction of transmit power for multimedia communications involving hand-held portable computing devices.
