The Random Waypoint Model

Paolo Santi · 2012

Considering its past and present popularity, the random waypoint (RWP) mobility model is by far the most thoroughly studied mobility model for next generation wireless networks, and several of its fundamental properties have been characterized in the literature. In this chapter, after a formal definition of the RWP mobility model, the author presents a characterization of the two most important properties of RWP mobile networks, namely, the stationary node spatial distribution and average nodal speed. For both these properties, he reports not only the characterization, but also some details about their derivation. This should show the reader how significant examples of tools from geometric probability and statistics are used within the field of mobility modeling. We will then conclude by presenting variations of the basic RWP model which have been proposed. Controlled Vocabulary Terms next generation networking; wireless networks
