An adaptive model of RED/ECN parameters

TCP congestion control mechanisms have been one of the focuses of numerous studies of the performance of the IP network and have undergone a number of enhancements. But TCP connections still experience alarmingly high loss rates, especially during times of congestion. The IETF has proposed a solution by deploying active queue management mechanisms in the routers, such as the RED/ECN algorithm. But we found that its effectiveness is highly dependent on its static parameters and has insufficient consideration of the number of connections multiplexed over the link, so it cannot adapt to the changes of network load effectively. To alleviate this problem, we propose an adaptive model of parameters by stages. The simulation results indicate the model can effectively reduce packet loss while maintaining high link utilization under various network conditions.
