This chapter describes a network called the wide area ubiquitous network (WAUN). The objective of this network is to globally provide a networked infrastructure of sensors and actuators to implement the ubiquitous networked society. The WAUN core network controls communication between pairs of a wired terminal and a mobile wireless terminal (WT) and offers functions of ID management, location management, security, and access control. The chapter describes the system architecture and key technologies for the WAUN wireless access network. It then discusses methods for reducing power consumption in WTs for WAUN, and the importance of low - power operation and the impact of intermittent operation on WT power consumption. Finally, it talks about a prototype system and confirms having achieved the R D target of a 5 - km cell radius using 10 - mW wireless transmission power terminals with 10 - year battery life. Controlled Vocabulary Terms actuators; sensors; wide area networks; wireless communication
