Is question answering a rational task

This note discusses issues in the treatment of question answering (QA) as an NLP task, considering historical influences on its interpretation and evaluation, and the inherent problems that these exacerbate. The discussion suggests that a rather di#erent approach may be needed for systems with real, and wider, utility.
