TELEMATIC APPLICATIONS IN GERMAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

B E Nickel · 1997

Telematics have been in application to German public transport in the fields of pre-trip information by electronic timetable, routing, and tariff information systems, and of preferential treatment at traffic lights suitable for intersections, narrow street sections, dynamic tram stops and metered access zones. Other telematics applications in Germany are intelligent on-board devices for bus and light rail, automatic vehicle monitoring and control and dynamic passenger information at stops. Electronic cash and automatic fare collection belong to public transport telematics as well as automatic operation of underground and overhead trains. When it comes to telematics, public transport in Germany is in a good position; it has been applying transport telematics for several years to a large extent, so many systems have already passed the field-test status, they have been debugged successfully, they have been standardized as far as necessary by the German Public Transport Association (VDV), and there is a common data interface named Transmodel which has been adopted as a European standard.
