Design Solutions Analysis for Mobile Handsets

Sajal Kumar Das · 2010

The main reason why detection in a fading channel shows poor performance compared with an AWGN channel is because of the randomness of the channel gain due to the deep fade event. Thus, in order to combat these effects, we have to establish the corresponding radio receiver design solutions. This chapter mainly focuses on baseband design solutions. To improve the received signal quality and to reduce the bit error rate it is mainly diversity, channel estimation, channel equalization, channel coding techniques, interference mitigation, and modulation techniques that will be used. These are discussed in the chapter. The design decision when choosing any diversity technique depends on various factors, such as channel coherent bandwidth, coherent time, and the presence of a number of independent signal paths at any one instant. Controlled Vocabulary Terms baseband; channel estimation; design engineering; interference suppression; mobile handsets; modulation techniques
