Sensor Placement in Sensor and Actuator Networks

Xu Li, Amiya R. Nayak, David Simplot‐Ryl, Ivan Stojmenović · 2010

Coverage is a functional basis of any sensor network. The impact on coverage from stochastic node dropping and inevitable node failure, coupling with controlled node mobility, gives rise to the problem of movement-assisted sensor placement in wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSAN). Four subproblems of movement-assisted sensor placement have been investigated for coverage improvement in the literature. These problems are given a general definition. After a mobile sensor makes its decision for self-deployment or relocation, it will migrate from its current position to the target position. Mobile sensor migration can be accomplished in a direct way or in a shifted manner. Sensor self-deployment is an active research subject that is continuously drawing large amount of attention. There exist a few sensor relocation algorithms in the literature. The chapter groups these algorithms according to their employed replacement discovery methods and reviews them in detail.
