Implementing Analogies Using APE Rules in an Electronic Tutoring System

In a corpus of eighty-one human tutoring sessions in physiology, the use of analogy to help students make correct inferences was successful 81% of the time. As a result, we are adding the most important tutor-proposed analogies that have a base in the domain to our intelligent tutoring system CIRCSIM-Tutor. We are using the APE dialogue planner because it allows for both hierarchical schemas and changes to the plan when the tutor wants to correct a student's error.
