Game rendering: a material editor for the object-oriented game rendering engine
Thong Chee Wai Benjamin, Edmond C. Prakash · 2006
The Object-oriented Graphics Rendering Engine (OGRE) is a popular open sourced 3D Engine. It is purely a rendering engine and does not provide for other functionalities such as networking or sound. OGRE features a powerful material system which is similar to that of the DirectX Effects Framework. However it suffers from the lack of a GUI to both specify and edit material scripts which deem it cumbersome to use. This project addresses the issue by designing and implementing an innovative in-engine multi-user material script editor, through the use of other publicly available software libraries like Crazy Eddie's GUI (CEGUI), RakNet, Boost and Xerces. The result is a highly customizable, extendable and user-friendly GUI front end for the multi-user specification and editing of scenes and objects not limited to material scripts. The integration of other public libraries also provides additional functionalities including a command console, networking, threading and XML support. Thus, developers can now rapidly create interactive multi-user applications such as interior design walkthroughs and product visualizations.
