TRANSITION IN RAILWAY TICKET VENDING MACHINES - GREATER CONVENIENCE TO PASSENGERS

About 5.5 million vending machines are in use in Japan, and 90% of all JR East tickets are sold by ticket vending machines. This paper describes the transition of the ticket vending machines from the technical viewpoint and discusses what the machines should be like in the future. The ultimate goal of JR East is to develop a machine that provides the greatest convenience to passengers, based on the effective use of achievements in the field of research, into the man-machine interface, voice recognition and the science of human behavior.
