Using lazy memo functions to add database assignments to a web programming course

Robin M. Snyder · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2004

Courses in web programming are becoming increasingly popular. However, covering meaningful database functionality in such courses can exceed the background of most students. This paper show how to take a simple programming problem that consists of input and computed output, and have that problem span a series of web-based assignments. An important part of this progression is the use of lazy memo functions so that meaningful database processing can be included in the course without requiring that students have taken a previous course in database systems. To assist the students, the author has written a tool that generates some of the code required to call the database stored procedure.
