A Hierarchical System for Distributed Computer Control of a Chemical Reactor

CD Rowles, ML Brisk · 1979

The use of a hierarchy of microprocessor, small minicomputer, and mainframe computer to carry out automatic on-line sequentially designed experiments in catalyst kinetics is described. A method of inter-processor communication and a functional design for the microprocessor software which simplify programming and allow flexibility of operation are presented. Experience with the system has shown that the concept of distributing relevant computing power to the tasks that need it results in efficient use of both hardware and programmer time.
