Reconstructing dialogue history

Marc G. J. Swerts, Emiel Krahmer · 2001

This paper deals with a perceptual analysis of accent structure in Dutch to see to what extent listeners are able to reconstruct information from the prior discourse context on the basis of prosodic properties of the current utterance. Using data collected in an earlier dialogue game experiment, subjects were asked to perform a perceptual task in which they had to try and reconstruct what the previous utterance was on the basis of input utterances with different accent patterns. Our results reveal that listeners are able to correctly guess the prior context for a significant number of cases, but that performance depends on the type of intonation contour of the input utterance. 1.
